「青春」という名の詩
アメリカのサムエル・ウルマン（１８４０〜１９２４）という詩人の詩「青春」（原題・Youtｈ）を知って２０年以上たつ。どういうきっかけだったかは覚えていないが、いたく感銘。この詩に魅入られ、作者を追ってアメリカまで行って、詩のふるさとや作者のひととなりを調べ上げた作山宗久さんの著した《「青春」という名の詩》（産業能率大学出版部刊）も購入したものだ。（写真）
この詩も、作者もアメリカではそれほど知られた存在ではなかったようで、日本人の心情にぴったりとあったのかアメリカより日本で有名のようである。それには作山宗久さんの《「青春」という名の詩》の本も大きな役割を果たしたと思われる。
先にhatena友のkirariさんにも紹介したところだが、ここにアップしてみよう。原詩の−−it is the freshness of the deep springs of ilfe. というところがとてもいい。

青 春

青春とは人生のある期間ではなく、心の持ちかたを言う。
薔薇(ばら)の面差(おもざ)し、紅(くれない)の唇(くちびる)、しなやかな手足ではなく、
たくましい意志、豊かな想像力、炎(も)える情熱をさす。
青春とは人生の深い泉の清新さをいう。
青春とは臆病さを退ける勇気、安きにつく気持ちを振り捨てる冒険心を意味する。
ときには、２０歳の青年よりも６０歳の人に青春がある。
年を重ねただけでは人は老いない。理想を失うとき初めて老いる。
歳月は皮膚にしわを増すが、情熱を失えば心はしぼむ。
苦悩･恐怖･失望により気力は地に這(は)い精神は芥(あくた)になる。
６０歳であろうと１６歳であろうと人の胸には、脅威に魅(ひ)かれる心、
おさな児のような未知への探究心、人生への興味の歓喜がある。
君にも吾にも見えざる駅逓(えきてい)が心にある。
人から神から美･希望・よろこび・勇気・力の霊感を受ける限り君は若い。
霊感が絶え、精神が皮肉の雪におおわれ、悲嘆の氷にとざされるとき、
２０歳であろうと人は老いる。頭(こうべ)を高くあげ希望の波をとらえる限り、
８０歳であろうと人は青春にして已(や)む。
Youth

Youth is not a time of life,
it is a state of mind.
It is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees,
it is a matter of the will, a quality of the imagination, a vigor of the emotions,
it is the freshness of the deep springs of ilfe.
Youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over timidity of the appetite,
for adventure over the love of ease.
This often exists in man of sixty more than a boy of twenty.
Nobody grows old merely by a number of years . We grow old by deserting our ideals.
Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles soul.
Worry, fear, self-distrust bows the heart and turns the spirit back to dust.
Whether sixty or sixteen, there is in every being's heart the lure of wonder, the unfailing child-like appetite of what's next, and the joy of the game of living. In the center of your heart and my heart there is wireless station, so long as it receives message of beauty, courage and power from men and from the Infinite, so long are you young.
When the aerials are down, and your spirit is covered with snows of cynicism and the ice of pessimism, then you are grown old, even at twenty, but as long as your aerials are up, to catch the waves of optimism, there is hope you may die young at eighty.

作山さんの著作によると、サムエル・ウルマンは１８４０年、ドイツ生まれのユダヤ人。１８５１年に両親と共にアメリカに移住。南北戦争従軍などを経て、アラバマ州バーミンガムに金物屋を開業。市の教育委員、イスラエル寺院（シナゴーグ）の会長などをつとめながら、青少年の教育に当たる。著者が８０歳になった時に家族が出版した詩集「From the Summit of Years, Four Score」がウルマンの唯一の詩集であるようだ。
