昨日電車の中で英語のリビングバイブルを読んでいて、下記のボールドの部分が目に留まりました。屋根って「粘土の屋根」で、「穴をあける」なの？と思ったからです。
Four men arrived carrying a paralyzed man on a stretcher.
They couldn’t get to Jesus through the crowd, so they dug through the clay roof above his head and lowered the sick man on his stretcher, right down in front of Jesus.
When Jesus saw how strongly they believed that he would help, Jesus said to the sick man, “Son, your sins are forgiven!”

ちなみに、NIVでは「屋根」となっています。
Since they could not get him to Jesus because of the crowd, they made an opening in the roof above Jesus by digging through it and then lowered the mat the man was lying on.
(Mark 2:4 NIV)
私の聖書(口語訳)では、このようになっていました。
ところが、群衆のために近寄ることができないので、イエスのおられるあたりの屋根をはぎ、穴をあけて、中風の者を寝かせたまま、床をつりおろした。
(マルコ 2:4)
実家は2回建て替えましたが、一番古い家(寛政3年)は藁葺屋根でした。部屋によっては、天井がない部屋もありました。そのため、私は下の絵のように「屋根を剥がして」いるイメージを持っていました。
ギリシャ語も調べましたが、いま一つわかりませんでした。当時の家の構造がわからないのですが、恐らく当時の家の屋根は粘土も使われていたのかと思われます。。^^;
