The British Museum
概要
- 1753年にロンドンに設立。一般公開は1759年。医師にして科学者にして芸術品その他の収集家であったサー・ハンス・スローンのコレクションが、博物館設立の基礎コレクションのひとつとなった。その後もコレクションは続けられ、図書部門は大英図書館（The British Library）、絵画部門はナショナル・ギャラリー（National Gallery）として独立。現在では、ギリシャ政府が返還を求めているアテネのパルテノン神殿の神殿彫刻(the Parthenon Marbles)、やロゼッタ・ストーン等の古代エジプト関係の考古学的コレクション、メソポタミア文明、とくにアッシリア芸術のコレクション、インドの初期仏教美術コレクションなど、世界中から収集されたその膨大なコレクション（６百万点以上）を誇る、世界でも有数の規模をもつ博物館のひとつとなっている。展示スペースの都合で一般の人が目にすることができるのはそのなかのごく一部にすぎないが、一日で見終わることなどとてもできない。
- 2000年度に大英図書館の移転に伴う改装が終了、別の場所にあった民族学部門のコレクションが里帰りした。
- ということで、「ブリティッシュ」という名前を冠していながら、そのコレクションは、「ブリティッシュ」ではなかったりするんである。
- The British Museum, one of the world's greatest and most famous museums. was founded in London in 1753. One of the three founding collection was that of Sir Hans Sloane, a physician and scientist who collected literature and art.
- The museum is home to some six million objects covering the story of human culture from its first beginning to the present day. Many of the artefacts are stored underneath the museum, due to lack of space. The museum opened to the public on January 15, 1759.
- It is interesting to note that although it is a "British" national museum, most of its collection does appear to be NOT "British."
