東日本大震災で生じたがれき量の多さが復興への大きな壁になっていますが，その被害は国内だけに留まらないようです。DAILY YOMIURI ONLINE（04/20/11付け）の”Quake debris to reach Hawaii in 2012"という記事から表現を探します。以下記事一部引用です。
Debris swept into the sea after the Great East Japan Earthquake likely will reach the shores of the Hawaiian Islands in about a year and the West Coast of North America in 2014, according to a Japan-U.S. joint research organization.
The International Pacific Research Center made computer forecasts of the movement of the debris, which include destroyed houses and car tires swept out to sea by the March 11 tsunami.
The center, based at the University of Hawaii, predicted the path of the flotsam by using such data as sea currents and movements of observation buoys.

今回注目する語はflotsamです。文脈からだけでも「流れてくるがれき」といったことを表しているのだと想像ができますが，確認のため辞書で調べてみました。『新英和中辞典』（第5版，研究社）には「（遭難船の）浮き荷，漂流貨物，がらくた」とありました。さらに 『OXFORD現代英英辞典』（第6版，Oxford University Press）にもparts of boats, pieces of wood or rubbish/garbage, etc. that are found floating on the sea or along the shore; any kind of rubbish/garbageとあるので，ただのがれきではなく「（日本から流れてくる）水上のがれき」であることがわかります。
最後に，flotsam「浮き荷」と関連してjetsam「投げ荷」やlagan「浮標付き投げ荷」も覚えておきたいですね（『ジーニアス英和大辞典』）。（ゼミ生 pear）
