米大統領選の共和党候補者指名争いのヤマ場である“スーパーチューズデー”では，10州で行われた予備選・党員集会の内，ロムニー氏がオハイオ州を含む6州で勝利しました。

今回の表現はbellwether です。辞書で確認すると「先導者，率先する人；（米）風潮，傾向などを示す人［もの］；指標」とあります（『ジーニアス英和辞典』第4版，大修館書店）。bellwetherを2語に分けると，bell「鈴」＋wether「去勢した雄牛」を表します。さらに語源を調べてみると，“mid-15c., from bell + wether; the lead sheep (on whose neck a bell was hung) of a domesticated flock; used earlier in the figurative sense of "chief, leader" (early 15c.).”とありました（http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/bellwether）。これを見て，以前，田邉先生にbulldozerの語源を教えて頂いた時の感覚が思い出されました。（GP）
