Chinese papers low-key about N.Korea nuclear test

Chinese newspapers reported North Korea's 3rd nuclear test in a cautious manner on Wednesday. This apparently reflects the government's line not to provoke its neighbor.

 The Communist Party's newspaper People's Daily carried a foreign ministry statement issued on Tuesday on the front page. The statement criticized the North's test.



The article added that reactions from the international community are strong. It reported condemnations from the UN Security Council and concerned nations, including the United States and Japan.

But it did not say China should step up sanctions against the North. 

Other papers carried analyses of the incident by experts on international affairs. Most of them followed the foreign ministry statement that put an emphasis on solving issues through dialogue and a cool-headed manner.
