本日は、Telegraph の記事より表現を拾います。1976年の公開から数え、第7作目になる映画 ロッキー シリーズの最新作のヨーロッパプレミアがロンドンのレスタースクエアで行われました。

最近のニュース番組やワイドショーでもっぱら話題となっているSMAPの解散報道がBBCでも取り上げられていました。

アメリカで有名な宝くじパワーボールの一等に当選者が三名いることが分かりました。一等賞金１６億ドルは、三等分されることになります。

取り上げる表現は、“bonanza”です。Oxford Dictionary.comを確認してみると、“A situation which creates a sudden increase in wealth, good fortune, or profits”と記載されています。一等の１６億円が当選し、急に大金を得たことからこの表現が使われているのではないでしょうか。『ジーニアス英和辞典第４版』（大修館書店）も見てみると、「（予期しない）大もうけ、（思いがけない）幸運」とありました。
類義語に“windfall”と “manna”が調べていく中で発見しましたが、Oxford Dictioanry.comを用いて比較してみました。

ついに当選者が出ましたが3人が当選するという思いがけない結果となりました。金額は16億ドルで日本円にして約1879億円だそうです。

"bonanza"を取り上げます。『ジーニアス英和辞典』によると「(思いがけない)幸運」とありました。jackpotとは異なり思いがけないというニュアンスが入ることがわかりました。また"bonanza"は「富鉱帯」という意味もありますが、鉱山などで大量の金などが出ることから転じて、大豊の年など、巨額の収益や報酬のことを表すときに使われる表現です。
Wiktionaryで語源を見てみると、スペイン語で「穏やかな海・繁栄」といった意味もあります。そして中世ラテン語で、malacia と言い、そこに「良い」という意味の bonus と組み合わせ、bonacia になったとありました。(lua)

米国籍の出産年齢の統計に関する記事です。調査によると2014年度は初出産の平均年齢が26,3歳であるのに対し，2000年は24.9歳と年齢が上回っております。出船年齢が顕著に上昇したのが2009年であり，米国が不況に陥った年と重なります。人口統計学者によると，大不況が発生すると出産年齢が伸びるということはよく見られる現象であると指摘しております。
記事の中で気になった単語は"uptick"です。『Wisdom英和辞典第三版』（三省堂）によると="upswing"で「（急激な）向上[増加]」などという意味がありました。Oxford Dictionaries.comには"A small increase or slight upward trend"と定義されていると同時に，主として北米で用いられる用語とありました。ついでに"upswing"もOxford Dictionaries.comで調べると"An increase in strength or quantity; an upward trend"とあります。"uptick"は上昇幅が小さい場合に用いるようです。（Ume）
The age of first-time mothers is rising faster in the US
Ken Johnson, a demographer at the University of New Hampshire, says this has everything to do with the so-called Great Recession, and on women delaying childbirth as a result of tough economic times.
"The other time in American history when there's been this kind of change was during the Great Depression itself," he says.
According to the new CDC report, women under 20 account for most of the change in behaviour. While Mathews and his team also saw an uptick in the number of first-time mothers who are over the age of 30, the more dramatic effect took place in the slowing rate of teenage pregnancy.
