Poll: 65% want consumption tax hike postponed
Sixty-five percent of respondents in a recent Yomiuri Shimbun survey said the planned hike in the consumption tax rate from the current 8 percent to 10 percent in April 2017 should be postponed.
This figure was much higher than the 29 percent who said the hike should be implemented as planned.
The nationwide opinion survey was conducted from Friday through Sunday. The survey method was partially changed this time, by dialing not only fixed-line but also mobile phone numbers and also widening the age bracket of respondents from 20 or older to 18 or older, in light of the upcoming legal revision to lower the voting age from 20 to 18.

今回取り上げる表現は"age bracket"というものです。『ジーニアス英和辞典』(第５版)によると、「年齢層」といった意味が記されていました。ここで2番目の"bracket"という単語をもう少し掘り下げていきたいと思います。"bracket"には名詞で「(棚などを支える)腕木、角かっこ、(同じ所得･年齢層などの)階層･集団」と意味が載っていました。上の記事では最後の「階層･集団」という意味が当てはまると考えられます。名詞の他にも動詞で「腕木で支える、砲撃する」といった意味もありました。
１つの単語でもこのように複数の意味があるのは面白いと思いました。(Mt.Fuji)
