At Sunday’s 59th annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles, the air felt sticky with deja vu. A boffo-selling soothsayer, Adele, had been pitted against a superstar-turned-agitator, Beyoncé, for the night’s heaviest prizes: song, record and album of the year.
“boffo-selling”に注目していきます。まず，“boffo”（/bɑ'fou/, /bɔ'fou/）から確認していきます。これには，名詞「ヒット作」，形容詞「大ヒットの」，「素晴らしい」などの意味があります（『英辞郎on the web』）。本文では，“boffo-selling soothsayer”と使われており，「大ヒット曲を生み出す人」となるのではないでしょうか。

今回取り上げる表現は、"smithereens" /smìðəríːnz/です。『ウィズダム英和辞典』(第３版、三省堂)を引いたところ、「(粉々になった)断片」とありました。“smash [blow, blast] A to [into] smithereens”で「Aを粉々にする」という意味になるそうです。LDOCEにも“smash/blow etc something to smithereens”という形で載っており、"informal to destroy something by breaking it into very small pieces, or with an explosion"と定義されていました。

文部科学省が組織的に再就職あっせんを行っていた問題で，同省を退職した元幹部が慶応大学にも再就職していたことがわかりました。

気になった表現は“cushy job”です。“cushy”は/ˈkʊʃi/と発音されます。この表現をLDOCEで調べてみると，“a cushy job or life is very easy and does not need much effort”と定義されていました。さらに『ジーニアス英和辞典』(大修館書店)でも確認すると，「楽で割のいい仕事」と記載されていました。この記事では「(仕事など)を見つける，〜にありつく」を意味する“land”とともに使われており，“land cushy job(s)”で「天下る」などと表せます。
“cushy job”を調べていて，以前授業で先生に “plum job”という表現を教わったことを思い出しました。これもまた「給料もよく魅力のある仕事」(『ジーニアス英和辞典』同上)を意味するため，“cushy job”をこれに関連させて覚えたいです。(ninetails)

思わず共感してしまう方も多いのではないでしょうか。

気になった表現は “spew venom”です。Oxford Dictionary of English (Second Edition Reserved, Oxford University Press)には、 “spit venom”で “to show that you are very angry; to speak in an angry way”と載っておりました。venomの代わりにbloodを使用することもできるようです。
『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第五版，大修館）でも確認したところ、「起こって話す，怒りを示す」とのことでした。

また"bump"には、「ぶつかる、衝突」などの意味があり、さらに"bumper"には「(自動車の)バンパー」のほかに「ばかでかい(もの)、異常に多い(見事な)もの、大入り満員、豊作(豊漁)(の)」という意味があるため、"bumper"を"to"で繋ぐことで「異常に多い車」つまり、「渋滞」と解釈出来ると思います。

気になった単語は“tableau”です。Oxford Living Dictionariesでは“A group of models or motionless figures representing a scene from a story or from history; a tableau vivant”と定義されていました。
『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第五版、大修館書店）では、この文章に適する語義として「絵のような場面、劇的場面」というものがありました。
“tableau vivant”で「活人画」となるそうです。「活人画」とは扮装をした人が画中の人物のように動かず無音で、歴史上の人物や出来事を再現するもののことです。テレビ番組で、歴史の特集の時にナレーションとともに流れる再現VTRがイメージしやすいかと思います。
また、“table”が隠れているのでフランス語を語源とした単語であることがわかります。“table”といえば「テーブル、食卓」を思いつきますが、古フランス語で「ボード」や「四角いパネル」といった意味もあったそうです。
日本の首相とアメリカ大統領がゴルフをするのは、岸信介首相とアイゼンハワー大統領が1957年に行って以来60年ぶりのことなので、トランプ氏がツイッターにあげた写真はまさに「劇的瞬間」となったようです。(flyingbird)

トランプ大統領の側近であるマイケル・フリン米大統領補佐官が辞任しました。役職に就任する前に，中米ロシア大使とロシアに対する制裁について話していたことが問題視されたためだと思います。
記事の中で気になった表現は"cut loose"です。『Wisdom英和辞典第三版』（三省堂）を調べると「＝ break loose」とあります。"break loose"を同様の辞書で調べると「A<人など> をB<集団など(の影響)> から切り離す, 解き放つ, 自由にする」などという意味がありました。Oxford Dictionaries.comには"Distance or free oneself from a person, group, or system"と定義されております。フリン氏は，親ロシアである一方，イスラム教徒に対しては批判的な姿勢を貫いておりました。トランプ氏の側近のこのような考えはトランプ大統領自身の行動にも影響を与えてきたと思われます。(Ume)
Michael Flynn: Trump's national security adviser quits
The ground crumbled beneath his feet only recently, however, after revelations that his conversation with a Russian ambassador included talk of US-imposed sanctions.
