　ユネスコ無形文化遺産に登録されている「博多祇園山笠」が行われ、スター・ウォーズをテーマにした山笠がお披露目されました。

Star Wars decorative float stars at Fukuoka summer festival

A Star Wars-themed decorative float covered with images of the movie franchise's characters grabbed attention July 2 at this city's annual summer festival.

The aim of the float is to advertise the movie “Star Wars: The Last Jedi,” which will be released in December in Japan.

“ 'Star Wars' is one of my favorite movies so I really enjoyed making it,” said Isamu Tanaka, a 45-year-old doll-maker. The float will first take to the city streets on July 12 and then again on July 15 during the Hakata Gion Yamakasa festival.

　float /flóʊt/ を取り上げます。この単語を見てまず浮かぶのが動詞の意味で、浮かぶ、漂うなどですが、この記事では名詞として用いられています。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）で引いてみると「（パレードの）山車（だし）」という意味が見つかり、お祭りに登場した山笠のことをさしていることがわかりました。

　LDOCEには “a large vehicle that is decorated to drive through the streets as part of a special event” と定義されています。乗物を意味するvehicleを用いて説明されているところから、人が乗り込む場合を考えると確かにそうだなと思いました。

　過去にブログで取り上げられているものを確認してみると、その他にも“portable shrine”や“pageant”という言葉もあるようです。しかし、“pageant”の方は人に見せる見せ物（ショー）といった意味合いの方が強いことがわかりました。（aqua）
