今回はdeity /déɪəṭi/ を紹介します。文脈から「神」と推測しました。
『ジーニアス英和辞典』第４版（大修館）には「神, 女神」「造物主, 神」また「神位, 神格, 神性」とあります。LDOCEでは “a god or GODDESS” と定義されていました。
語源を調べてみると、ラテン語で「神」を表すdeus, divusから由来していることがわかりました。（英・語・源）
ではgodとdeityの違いは何なのでしょうか。
godは “GOD the sprit or BEING who Christians, Jews, Muslims etc pray to, who they believe created the universe” とあり、主に一神教の神に対して使われます。
一方deityは “a god. Deity is more formal than god” “a Hindu deity” とあり、こちらは多神教の神を表します。(LDOCE)
以上のことから、日本の神々を表す単語はdeityであることわかりました。
