Léon Croizat に始まる「汎生物地理学（panbiogeography）」がたどった“学派”としての錯綜した現代史を振り返ることは興味深い．学問的伝統だけでなく，Croizat をはじめ汎生物地理学者と称される研究者たちの個人史もまたこみいっているように見えるからである．本書の著者 Michael Heads もさまざまなキャリアを経て，現在は独立研究者として活動している．本書が，分子データを用いた John C. Avise 風の「系統地理学（phylogeography）」やさらに昔の「分断生物地理学（vicariance biogeography）」ではけっしてない所以は，思想的背景がそもそも異なっているからだ．熱帯地域の地理的分布に関する詳細なケーススタディーをふまえた分厚い本書の“行間”を読んでいきたいと考えるのはいささか天邪鬼な読み手かもしれない．
