輪廻する指揮者たち

バーンスタインの急病で、チェロ奏者だったトスカニーニは、指揮者としてのチャンスに恵まれた。
そのバーンスタインも、ブルーノ・ワルターの急病のため、補助指揮者から昇格することができたのだ。

Both Alturo Toscanini and Leonard Bernstein got their big opportunities as conductors when they were called upon to substitute. Toscanini, a cellist at the time, took the podium at the opera house in Rio de janeiro and conducted Verdi's Aida from memory. Bernstein substituted for an ailing Bruno Walter in Carnegie Hall, and his performance as conductor made the front page of newspapers in new york the next morning.
