Mr. J. D. Lowman,
Seattle, Wash. U. S. A.
Dear Sir :
So far it has been my pleasant duty to send to you annual greetings on behalf of the Late Honorary Commercial Commissioners who travelled through your country covering the Fall and Winter of 1909 and who received boundless kindness from the hands of the officials and private citizens of your great country.
In order that we may perpetuate the never-forgettable gratitude which we sustain towards you, we made the 17th of December the memorial day of our trip to America since we arrived on our home land on that day. We have, every year, held our reunion with a special joy and enthusiasm. Some years we had to change the date of meeting, postponing them a few days, but never failed to hold it. The gathering of 1920 was held in the evening of the 24th of December at the Banker's Club, Marunouchi, Tokio. This was the eleventh reunion and the following members were present on the occasion :
Kenzo Iwahara Tatsuya Kato
Kinsen Kubota Tokunosuke Machida
Meiroku Masuda Kaichiro Nedzu
Kumejiro Tani Shinkichi Tamura
Sekizo Ueda Eiichi Shibusawa
As the chairman of the evening, I opened up the meeting narrating my experiences concerning my dealings with American-Japanese questions during the year. Afterward they began, every one of them, to talk about their pleasant experiences which they were permitted to enjoy during the journey, because of your inexpressible kindness and exquisite courtesy. Indeed real brothers could not have received any better attention than what we the strangers received from your hands.
Thus every one of us spent a very delightful evening refreshing our memories of the good old days.
You know that we are advocates of peace and especially are anxious to see a permanent peace maintained between America and Japan. Very likely this is your desire also. Can we not then, we on this side of the Pacific and you on the other, do our utmost to promote peace and friendship between us and also in the world at large? Thanking you again for your past courtesies to us, I beg to remain,
Very truly yours,
E. Shibusawa
