大変遅くなりましたが，田邉先生からの質問に挑戦します。今回は赤字の意味合いについてです。
まず，double downは「倍賭け」という意味の表現です（英辞朗on the WEB）。これは，カードゲームの“ブラックジャック”のルールの一つで，掛け金を2倍にしてさらにカードを一枚引くときに使用される用語です。
次にtrickle downはtrickle-down effectという用例で記載されており，「《経》トリクルダウン効果〈大企業への資金投下が次々と末端まで浸透して景気を浮揚させるという説〉」と説明されています（『ウィズダム英和辞典』第2版，三省堂）。これはレーガン大統領のときの経済政策に援用された理論でもありました。オバマ大統領が富裕層への増税を示唆している一方，ロムニー氏はブッシュ減税の維持などの方針から富裕層寄り（？）の立場を取っています。これらのことを踏まえると赤字を含むの一文は「富裕層（大企業）に対する減税等に景気回復という大きな賭けに打って出ようとする共和党の誰かさんに政権を渡すことはできない」などと解釈できます。
ちなみに、見出しにあるimpassionedはクリントン元大統領とオバマ大統領との微妙な関係を暗示していて、面白いですね。（GP）
