今回取り上げるのは hotbed です。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版 研究社）で調べてみますと、「1（罪、悪などの）温床、巣 2（園芸）温床」という意味であることがわかりました。LDOCEには “a place where a lot of a particular type of activity, especially bad or violent activity, happens” とありました。英語ではこの温床に暴力的なイメージが含まれるようです。 “hotbeds of extremism” で過激主義の温床という意味合いになるかと思われます。

It has long been known that the human brain’s reward system, which mediates pleasure, can be activated with a dummy pill devoid of any active ingredients — known as a placebo — if the person taking it thinks it’s real medicine.
“But it was not clear whether this could impact physical well-being,” Rolls told AFP.
Nor did scientists know — if, indeed, an immune response was strengthened — exactly how the signal traveled through the body.

昨日の読売テレビ 「遠くへ行きたい」は永六輔氏の追悼特別番組でした。
そのなかで永氏が辞書を語るシーンが印象に残りました。『広辞苑』を手にした同氏が「函は捨てよう、カバーを外そう。」と力説していたのです。
国語辞書の話でしたが、わたしが歴代の「英語仙人」からうかがい、自らも実践し、そして、学生にも伝えている辞書活用の基本のキです。なんだかとても嬉しい気分になりました。

人気沸騰中の「ポケモンGO」ですが、あまりの熱狂ぶりにさまざまな問題が生じています。

Pokémon Goで遊んでいる最中に事件や事故に遭う人が続出しています。

It wasn't until the next morning, when the teen's mother found bullet holes in the rear tire, hubcap and fender, that they reported the shooting to the sheriff's office.
The homeowner who shot at the teens has a different account of what happened early Saturday. When interviewed by deputies, the homeowner said he was woken up by a loud noise outside of his home and spotted a white car with its brake lights on in the street outside his house. That's when he grabbed his handgun and went outside. He recalled hearing someone say something to the effect of "did you get anything?" Then he said he stepped in front of the car and said not to move.
The car, he said, accelerated toward him. He fled from the street and shot at the car several times as it sped off.
The sheriff's office said the investigation is ongoing. In the news release, the sheriff's office warned homeowners to call 911 if they suspect someone breaking in and to avoid leaving the house to confront suspects. They also warned Pokémon Go users to avoid trespassing or driving while playing the game.

ソフトバンクが，英半導体大手のARMを3兆円で買収するという報道がなされました。ARM社はiPhoneのチップ等を供給しております。3兆円という金額はソフトバンクがボーダフォンを買収した金額を上回ります。買収の意図としては，ARMの技術を"intenet of things"に役立てたいと書かれております。
そこで，記事の中から取り上げたい表現は"internet of things"です。Oxford Dictionaries.comには"The interconnection via the Internet of computing devices embedded in everyday objects, enabling them to send and receive data"と定義されております。コンピューターや通信機器に限らず，あらゆる物が無線通信でインターネットに接続して，データのやりとりや制御を可能にする技術のことを示しております。
日本では，IoTという表現で使われております。IoTはビジネスで様々な役立ちがあり，既に実践されております。例えばショベルカーなどの建設機械を制作している小松製作所では，重機がネットに接続できるようになっております。コンピューター上で販売した重機の稼働率や部品の損耗など様々な情報が確認できます。もし，部品の取替が必要そうになったら，事前に必要な物を届けることができ，顧客満足を高めたり，輸送・在庫に関わる費用を削減することができます。
ソフトバンクがIoTの技術をどのように活用していくのか注目されます。妄想に過ぎませんが，ソフトバンクが開発したロボットのペッパー君をIoT化すれば，全国で稼働している各ペッパー君が日々行っている顧客との対話情報を収集することができます。この情報を活用して相手が喜ぶ話し方や話題をペッパー君同士が共有することで，当初設定したプログラムを超えたやり取りができるのかもしれません。（Ume）
ARM Holdings in £24bn Japanese takeover deal
The board of ARM is expected to recommend shareholders accept the offer - close to a 50% premium on its closing market value of £16.8bn on Friday.
The Cambridge-based firm is arguably the most precious jewel in the crown of British technology.
Its microchip designs are in an array of devices including Apple's iPhone.
Sources close to the deal say the Japanese company considered ARM well placed to exploit the "internet of things" - the embedding of microchips in whole new categories of household and business devices.

本日のゼミ活動内で扱った一文に、 “I take it with a grain of salt”という表現がありました。本日はこのreviewです。
すでにみなさんはご存じのことだと思いますが，『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第五版，大修館）によると、 “take O with a grain [pinch] of salt”で「〈話など〉を多少疑って聞く，話半分に聞く，額面通りにはとらない」とのことでした。
さらにOxford Dictionary of English (Second Edition Reserved, Oxford University Press)で調べたところ、 “regard something as exaggerated; believe only part of something”と載っておりました。
授業内では、「まゆつば」という意味だと教えていただきました。
語源をThe Phrase Finder というサイトで調べたところ、“The idea comes from the fact that food is more easily swallowed if taken with a small amount of salt.
