on showを取り上げます。文脈から「見せ物」といった意味かと推測ができましたが、どうなのでしょうか。
『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第四版、大修館書店）には「展示されて、陳列されて」とありました。LDOCEでは“being shown to the public”と定義されています。showには「見せ物」という意味があるのでこのような意味になります。
例文としては、The latest products were on show at the exhibition.やThe designer clothes will go on show in Chicago next month.などが挙げられていました。この例文からわかる通り、goと共起するようです。(rain)
Dexter 復習
授業で、アメリカ映画『ナイトミュージアム』を観ていたときに、UG先生から教わった単語を紹介します。
それがDexter /dékstɚ/ です。映画で主人公の博物館の鍵を器用に盗み出すモンキーの名前ですが、この命名には意味があるようです。
まずネットで調べてみると、Wikipediaには「主に英語圏で使われる男性名、天才、ガリ勉」を意味します。続いて『ジーニアス英和辞典』には「右側の」（right）とあり、上記の意味にどう発展していくのか気になりました。
語源を調べてみたところ、dexterはラテン語で「右」を意味します。また、ほとんどの人が利き腕は「右」であることからdexterの派生形であるdexterousは「器用な」という意味で用いられるようになったそうです。この意味の発展が「天才」を表すようになったと思われます。
日本語でも「右」は「上位, 上席」または「転じて、すぐれた方」を意味しますね。（広辞苑）ちなみに映画では、悪戯が好きなオマキザル（capuchin）ですが、猿の中でも最も知的とされているという説明がされています。(amphibian)

今回取り上げるのは，adamant /ˈædəmənt/ です。文脈から，「強い，断固とした」と予測しました。以下で意味等を確認していきます。
まず，LDOCEで意味を引いてみると，“determined not to change your opinion or a decision that you have made” とあり，『ウィズダム英和辞典』には，「(かたく)断固とした決意で，譲らない，断固主張する，言って聞かない，動じない」と載っていました。
語源は，ギリシャ語で「最も硬い金属」を意味する単語からきているそうです。

shambles /ʃˈæmblz/ が気になりました。『ジーニアス英和辞典』で調べると「大混乱の場，修羅場」とありました。LDOCEでは“if something is a shambles, it is very disorganized and there is a lot of confusion”と定義されています。以上から，空港が「完全に大混乱の場」であったことがよくわかりました。(Kiwi girl)
work-calloused 復習
秋季正規授業にて取っていたものの１つ、 Introductory Seminarという英米文学の小説を読み進めていく授業の中で出会った単語を紹介します。それが work-calloused で、初めはfigurativeな言い回しであったような印象を受けました。さっそく以下で定義等確認していきたいと思います。
まずCambridge English Dictionaryにてcallousを引くと、“unkind, cruel, and without sympathy or feeling for other people.” とあります。
続いて同辞書にてcallousedを調べると、“If feet or hands are calloused, they are covered with hard areas of skin.” と載っていました。
念のためCollins English Dictionaryにて callus探ると、“(pathology) an area of skin that is hard or thick, esp on the palm of the hand or sole of the foot, as from continual friction or pressure.” との説明がありました。
以上の内容を総括すると、callousに関しては２パターンの解釈ができ、１つは「冷淡な、無情な、人情味に欠ける」で、もう１つは「（皮膚硬直による）まめ、たこ」という医学用語に基づく単語であることが分かりました。また、実際の小説内では、人の容姿についての描写の一部としてwork-callousedが用いられていました。私なりの理解になりますが、workとかかっている場合の直訳は「（仕事柄の結果）手のたこやまめが目立っている」である一方、それが表す意味は（手にたこやまめができる程）一生懸命に頑張っている人」なのではないかと考えました。（bro-taro-world @ Calgary）
holler 復習
コンビニで働いている店員が販売しているタバコの番号を間違えてしまいました。それに対して怒鳴りつける男性の動画が、インターネット上で物議を醸しています。
After several demands for the employees, who appear to be working at an unidentified branch of convenience store chain FamilyMart, to get their branch’s franchise owner on the scene, the employee at the register informs the angry customer that he’s the shift manager. “Shut up!” the customer hollers. “I told you, Number 103!” he continues, proving that he actually is capable of repeating his request, despite feeling the need to preface it with several rounds of high-volume whining.

拾う単語はholler /ˈhɑːlər/ です。文脈から「叫ぶ」であると推測しました。
『ジーニアス英和辞典』(第五版、大修館書店)では「(...に)叫ぶ、叫び声」とあります。また、LDOCEでは “to shout loudly” と定義されています。Oxford Living DictionariesではLate 17th century (as a verb): variant of the rare verb hollo; related to halloo.と語源が載っていました。
この動画をどのように捉えるかは、その人の自由であると感じます。しかしながら、この一件は現代に生きる人の日々の余裕のなさ、何かからの圧迫を具現化したものであるように見えます。(seventh-dan)
お酒の勢いで
前の話になってしまいますが、ハロウィーンに渋谷で起こったトラックを倒してしまった人たちのニュースから取り上げます。ゼミ室でラジオを聞いていた際に丁度その出来事についての報道があり、「お酒の勢いで」はなんというのかと話題になりました。個人的にはBecause I drunk too much.というもの思い浮かびましたが、どうなのでしょうか。
インターネットで調べてみたところ、under the influence of alcoholやbeer talking、Dutch courage、liquid courageというものがありました。
beer talkingに関してはtalkであることから推測できるように、酔っぱらって何か大きなことを言ったりしたときに使われるそうです。
またDutch courageは『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第四版、大修館書店）によると「（酒でつけた）から元気」という意味だそうです。liquid courageはアメリカで使われる表現です。オランダ人がお酒に強いといわれていたことからこのように表現されるようになりました。個人的にはgo Dutchと同じで差別的な印象を受けるのであまり使わない方がいいのではないのかなと感じました。(rain)

今日は，10:30からの研究室での出版会議の前に裏ゼミをするつもりでしたが，参加者のM大学のアメリカ人教授が会議３時間前の7:00に到着され，動きがとれませんでした。結果，ゼミ生にはなにもしてやれず。「イブ裏ゼミ」でお返しをします。
なお，会議後にはGreen Top ３Fの教職員食堂に初めて行ってきました。１，２階のいつもみんなと行く学生用の食事とは違ってました。ちょっとUniversity College LondonのUpper Refectoryを思い出しました（まあ，あれほどの差はなかったけど...）。写真はステーキランチ。850円なり。amphibianは喰いたかろう！
明日は返す刀で湯島の出版社での編集会議です。おそらく恐怖の７時間...。I'm freaking out!

coup de grace 復習
メモの中から単語を取り上げます。coup de grace /kúːdəgrάːs/です。フランス語由来の表現であるということ以外は何もわからなかったので調べてみました。以下辞書の定義です。
Oxford Dictionary of English (2th): “a final blow or shot given to kill a wounded person or animal”
Collins Advanced Learner’s Dictionary (8th): “A coup de grace is an action or event which finally destroys something, for example an institution, which has been gradually growing weaker.”
Cambridge Dictionary: “an action that ends something that has been gradually getting worse, or that kills a person or animal in order to end their suffering”
『ジーニアス英和辞典』第5版（大修館）：「[通例the-] とどめの一発［一撃］(death blow)」
語源はOEDによるとやはり “French, literally ‘stroke of grace’” とのことでした。またcoup単体では「クーデター(coup d’etat)」「（非常に困難なことの）大成功、成就」という意味を持ちます（『ジーニアス英和辞典』第5版（大修館））。
今回の表現を調べていている際にほかにもいくつかcoupを用いた表現を見つけたので是非調べてみてください。（ko-chi @ Calgary）
