謹賀新年
新年明けましておめでとうございます。
昨年も大変お世話になりました。思えば、昨年はイギリスからのご挨拶で、今振り返ると1年間が本当にあっという間であったように思います。様々なものがすごいスピードで過ぎていく中で、昨年1年間も学びつづけることができたのは、先生のおかげです。
普段の授業だけでなく、ゼミにも参加させていただいたり、ブログに表現を投稿させていただいたり、ワークショップでは、模擬授業をさせていただく貴重な機会をいただきました。このような学びの機会をいただけなければ、今どうなっていたのかわかりません。本当にありがとうございました。
今年は、教員としての門出の年となりました。先生のもとで学べる機会はあとわずかになってしまい、とてもさびしく残念なのですが、教員になる最後の最後まで、良き教師になるための歩みを進めて参りたいと思います。どうぞ、今年もよろしくお願いいたします。1年間本当にありがとうございました。(Dew)
glutinous rice
愛知県名古屋市の熱田神宮で、2016年の豊作を願い約450キロの大鏡餅の奉納が行われました。
Huge rice cake offered to Atsuta Jingu
A huge rice cake has been offered to a shrine in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture, central Japan. The ritual is intended to wish for good health and an abundant harvest in the coming year.
Farmers and other residents of the prefecture offered Atsuta Jingu shrine the 2-layer rice cake weighing about 450 kilograms. The bottom layer has a diameter of 1.5 meters. The cake is made of 300 kilograms of glutinous rice. They have been presenting a large rice cake for the New Year to the shrine since 1946 in addition to regular offerings of rice and vegetables.
About 300 people wearing traditional white coats sang as they carried the rice cake on a wooden plate on the 200-meter path to the shrine's prayer hall.

今回取り上げるのは、“glutinous rice”という表現です。まず、“glutinous”をLDOCEで調べてみると、“very sticky”と定義されており、「非常に粘り気がある」ことが分かります。さらに『ジーニアス英和辞典』では「正式 にかわ質の、ねばねばする」、また「weblio英和辞典」では「もち性の、粘着性の」といった意味が確認できました。そのため、この記事の“glutinous rice”は「もち米」を表していると分かります。(ninetails)

田邉先生にお世話になり始めてから早くも2年が経ちます。昨年は英語学習だけでなく、就職活動など様々な面でご心配をお掛けしたことと思います。学習面においては、なかなか自分自身を変えられずに反省ばかりですが、それでも学習できる環境を提供してくださり、多くのことをご教授し続けてくださる先生には本当に感謝してもしきれません。あっという間に月日は流れ、ゼミ生として過ごせる日々もあと少しです。このゼミで、英語を学んでいる自分に自信を持てるようになるためにも、残りの時間を大切に、全力で英語と向き合っていきたいと思っております。
本年も常時英心の心と共に過ごしていきたいと思いますので、どうぞよろしくお願いいたします。

start CPR
先生から教えて頂いた記事から取り上げます（Inahoさんと同じ記事です）。
アメリカのフロリダ州で、火曜日の未明、母が誤って娘を撃ち、娘が病院に搬送され、死亡が確認されました。母親は、侵入者だと勘違いし、撃ってしまったそうです。

A woman in St. Cloud, Florida, woke up just before midnight Tuesday and fired a shot at a person she thought had broken into her home.
But the person wasn't an intruder; it was her 27-year-old daughter.
The woman fired one round, but police didn't say where the bullet hit the daughter. She died at a hospital.

取り上げる表現は、“CPR”です。“CPR”とは、“cardiopulmonary resuscitation”の略で、『ジーニアス英和辞典第４版』には、「心肺機能回復法、心肺蘇生法」と記載されていました。“start CPR”で「心肺蘇生法を行う」と表されていると思います。では、日本では、はやっているAEDとはどう違うのでしょうか。
まずCPRを見ていくと、『日本救急医学会』には、「心肺機能が停止した状態にある傷病者の自発的な血液循環および呼吸を回復させるために、心臓マッサージや人工呼吸などを行う心肺蘇生法」と記載されていました。
次にAED を確認すると、『自動体外式除細動器といい、電極のついたパッドを裸の胸の上に貼ると自動的に心臓の状態を判断し、もし心臓が細かくふるえて血液を全身に送ることができないようであれば、電気ショックを与えて心臓を正常に戻す機能』とありました。
人自ら行うか、機械が行うのかの違いがあることが分かりました。CPRを調べていく中で、心肺蘇生法を何度か学んだ記憶を思い出します。(Nao)

日本の理化学研究所が人工的に作り出した113番目の元素が「国際純正・応用化学連合」によって新たな元素と認定され，命名権が日本に与えられました。命名はこれまで欧米とロシアに限られていましたが，アジアでは初の快挙となりました。

enshrineを取り上げます。『ウィズダム英和辞典』第2版（三省堂）によると，shrineの第一語義は「｟かたく｠〖通例be ~d〗〈考え・権利・習俗などが〉«法律・神話などに»（大切なものとして）述べられている，謳われている」，第二語義は「«心・記憶などに»〈思い出など〉を大切に納める，刻む」」，第三語義は「«神殿などに»〈物〉を安置する」です。
OALD8には“(formal) to make a law, right etc. respected or official, especially by stating it in an important written document”とあります。この場合は，「新しい113番目の人工元素が周期表に載る」という意味です。日本の理化学研究所が新たに命名した元素により，理科に興味を持つ子が増えることを願うばかりです。（Kawada）

語源は『英語語源辞典』（研究社）によると，en-は「…の中に入れる；…を与える，付与する」，shrineは「箱」ということでした。同語源辞典によると，enshrineは1395年から「（聖者の遺骨を）静櫃[聖堂]に納める[祭る]」，1621年には「…を静櫃[聖堂など]のように入れている」の意味で用いられており，シェイクスピアの『ヘンリー六世』第三幕第二場では，「（聖者の遺骨を）静櫃[聖堂]に納める[祭る]」の意味が「大事にする」の意で比喩的に用いられているとあります。
shrineは，古英語の時代以降から1658年まで「箱」という意味で用いられ始め，古英語時代以降から「箱形聖遺物入れ」，ジョン・ミルトンの1629年には「聖堂，霊廟」の意味で用いられたそうです。さらに同語源辞典はシェイクスピアの『ロミオとジュリエット』第一幕第五場には，「像」の意，『ヴェニスの商人』第二幕第七場，『シンベリン』第五幕第五場，『ルークリース凌辱』第一幕には同じ用例があるとのことです。

結成10周年を迎えたAKB48の歴史を振り返ります。紅白歌合戦では、元メンバーによるサプライズ演出があったようですね。
Popular girl idol group AKB48 celebrated its 10th anniversary this year, with two big celebrations taking place earlier this month participated by former members.
During the last decade, the girls have rewritten numerous pop industry records in Japan. Let’s look back on their history.
AKB48’s latest single, “Kuchibiru Ni Be My Baby,” sold 813,000 copies on Dec. 9, the day it was released, according to Oricon Inc. This brought the group’s total CD sales of singles to a record 36,158,000 copies, surpassing the previous record of 35,809,000 set by rock duo B’z.
AKB48 has broken record after record, but the group’s path was not as smooth in the beginning. There were only seven people in the audience on Dec. 8, 2005, when AKB48 gave its first show at its exclusive AKB48 Theater in Tokyo’s Akihabara district. After releasing two independent label CDs, the group made its major-label debut with the single “Aitakatta” (Wanted to see you).
In 2007, AKB48 made its first appearance on NHK’s “Red & White Year-end Song Festival” on New Year’s Eve, although it was a joint performance of a medley with Shoko Nakagawa and Leah Dizon, who also became popular among people who flock to Akihabara.
The door to a breakthrough opened in 2008. “Oogoe Diamond” (Shout diamond), the group’s first single since transferring to King Records, reached No. 3 in the Oricon weekly music rankings. It was the first time one of the group’s singles had broken into the top three. The triumph was the fruit of the girls’ low-key efforts in promotion campaigns at shopping malls around the country.
In 2009, the single “Namida Surprise!” (Tears surprise!) became the official song for the 135th anniversary of The Yomiuri Shimbun. The song was used in commercials for the newspaper, which ran a series of articles in collaboration with AKB48. The group’s first “general election,” a popularity contest in which fans vote for their favorite members, also became a talking point.
In October 2009, “RIVER” became the group’s first No. 1 single on the Oricon chart. AKB48 also won its own berth on the “Red & White Year-end Song Festival” — confirmation of its rise to stardom in name and reality.

最初のfruitですが「果物」でなく、最後に実を実らせる植物の成長過程を語源とした“the good results that you have from something, after you have worked very hard - LDOCE”という意味になります。最近ですとninetails君がとりあげていました。low-keyはご存知のように「控えめな、地味な（“not intended to attract a lot of attention to an event, subject, or thing - LDOCE”）」という意味で、あまり人に知られたくない事柄等に用いられます（『Wisdom英和辞典第3版』三省堂）。しかし、ここで「控えめな（地味な）努力」としてしまうと違和感が生じてしまいます。そこで、「英辞郎 on the WEB」をみてみると「low-key efforts : 地道な努力」とありました。つまり、この表現は「地道な努力の賜物（結晶、成果）」と解釈できます。（Chris）

年明けからこんな記事で失礼いたします。
皆さんは，ズボンのポケットの中にあるスマートフォンを誤発信してしまったことはありませんか。今日はこの状況を英語で何というかを調べてみました。
「英辞郎 on the web」にはbutt dial，pocket dialとありました。Oxford Dictionaries Onlineには，“An inadvertent call made on a mobile phone in one’s rear trouser pocket, as a result of pressure being accidentally applied to a button or buttons on the phone”と定義されていました。これには動詞用法もあり，同じくOxford Dictionaries Onlineには，“Inadvertently call (someone) on a mobile phone in one’s rear trouser pocket, as a result of pressure being accidentally applied to a button or buttons on the phone”と説明されていました。

ロンドンでテロの容疑をかけられた夫婦が，獄中で釈明の手紙を書きました。夫が，義理の母に宛てた手紙によると，自分たちは完全に無罪であると主張しているようです。今後捜査が進む中で事実が明らかになってくると思います。
見出しの中で気になった表現は"drag into"です。『Wisdom英和辞典第三版』（三省堂）によると「に引きずり込む，を強引に持ち出す，に巻き込む」などという意味がありました。Oxford Dictionaries.comには"Introduce an irrelevant or inappropriate subject"と定義されております。"drag"の原義は「引く(draw)」とあり（『Wisdom英和辞典第三版』（三省堂））そこから転じて，事件に「巻き込まれる」などの表現が出てくるのだと思いました。（Ume）
Terror trial man 'wrote letter saying wife was dragged into case'
A man accused of plotting a terrorist attack in London told his mother-in-law in a letter from prison her daughter had been "dragged into this with me", their trial has heard.
Mohammed Rehman, 25, from Reading, said he was "truly and deeply sorry for everything" and expressed remorse his wife was "locked away like an animal".
Mr Rehman and his wife Sana Ahmed Khan, 24, deny preparing acts of terrorism.
The husband allegedly amassed chemicals for a large bomb, the Old Bailey heard.
Mr Rehman, of Radstock Road, also denies possessing an article for terrorist purposes.
