しかし先生がご著書でも取り上げられているように，この語には別の意味もあります。『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第五版、大修館書店）では「（賠償金）を裁定により与える、（契約などを）与える」とありました。Oxford Living Dictionaryには中期英語で“in the scene ‘issue a judicial decision’”とあり、語源もOnline Etymology Dictionaryではフランス語とされており、賞与よりも「判定する」の意味が先にあったことがわかります。同上英和辞典の原義に「注意深く観察した後で判定する」と記載されています。

研修たより
いよいよ訓練も折り返し地点に来ました。今回は訓練で印象に残った事と、休日の過ごし方を紹介します。
印象に残った事は、35日間一緒に過ごしてシニアボランティア（40歳から69歳）の方がこの間、退所された事です。
短い間でしたが、シニアの方には本当に様々な刺激を頂きました。なぜ海外ボランティアに応募されたのか尋ねると、「ずっと仕事一筋で過ごして来たから、これからは自分の視野をもっと広げたいと思って応募した。」「これで海外ボランティアに参加するのは4回目だが、いくつになっても学び続けたいと思ったから何度も挑戦している。」という答えが返ってきました。
これを聞いて、心から本当に素敵だと思いました。
わたしはシニアの方から、好きな事を楽しみながら学び続けること、挑戦することに年齢制限はない、ということを学びました。これまで一緒に過ごしてきて感じた事や、学んだ事をこれからもずっと忘れず、好きな事を突き詰めて挑戦していこうと思いました。
次に、休日の過ごし方を紹介します。日曜日は、ゼミ生のTくんに紹介してもらった駒ヶ根名物のソースかつ丼を食べに行ったり、避暑地である中央アルプスを訪れたり、観光地を回っています。アルプスは、地上から2612メートルの場所にある千畳敷カールへ行きました。この日は雨が降ると予想されていたのですが、運良く雨が上がった時に登る事ができたので、綺麗な景色を見る事ができました。
標高が高いので地上より涼しく、とても過ごしやすかったです。
ここまで登るのに駒ケ岳ロープウェイを使うのですが、日本一高いロープウェイと言われているそうで、とても怖かったです。
美味しいものを食べて、駒ヶ根の自然に触れる事でリフレッシュできました。（Hakata）

YOKKAICHI, Mie Prefecture--A whale was hunted down on a street here by harpoon-brandishing fishers Aug. 14.
Much to the relief of animal rights activists, the whale was made of papier-mache in this re-enactment of a traditional hunt once carried out in the Ise Bay.
It was part of the annual Kujira-bune Gyoji (whale ship festival) of the Toridejinja shrine to pray for a big catch.

今回気になった単語はharpoonです。『ウィズダム英和辞典』（第3版 三省堂）で調べてみると、これは「（捕鯨用の）銛」という意味だそうです。harpoon gunで「捕鯨砲」という意味になります。また、アメリカの対艦用ミサイルに”Harpoon”というものがあり、元は浮上潜水艦を空から攻撃することを目的としていたため、浮上潜水艦をクジラに見立てこのような名前になったのだと思われます。この単語の語源を調べてみると複数ありましたが、「留め金、襟留め」を表すラテン語harp 、もしくは「鉤」を表すギリシャ語harpeに指小接尾辞のonをつけたものという記載がありました。（goo辞書）
この祭は「鳥出神社の鯨船行事」と呼ばれ、伊勢湾の捕鯨の様子を鯨船に見立てた山車を用いたりしながら再現し、大漁を祈る祭だそうです。（Ayaka）

leave yourself extra timeは一見なんでもないフレーズかもしれませんが、日本語でいうところの「時間に余裕をもってお出かけください」に相当する表現だと思いました。
extra time自体は「延長戦」ですが、これにleaveをもってきてこのように表現するところが英語的だと感じました。辞書、ネットともにヒットはありませんが、ただネット辞書に、"I don't leave any extra time." （時間にはまったく余裕がない。）というのがありました。(Hapidra)

cramp /krˈæmp/ を取り上げます。足に出る症状を表していますが、どのような症状なのでしょうか。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版 研究社）で調べると「1（筋肉の）けいれん、こむら返り 2（複数形で）（米）腹部の激痛、（特に）生理痛」とありました。1の「けいれん」という意味に関しては、アメリカでは加算名詞、イギリスでは不可算名詞にするのが一般的のようです。例として “have (get) (a) cramp in one’s leg” で「足にけいれんを起こす」が取り上げられていました。

カラオケは日本語を学ぶのに最も適した方法のひとつで、中でも一番面白く効果的なのは演歌とされています。
Let’s look at how Yujiro Ishihara and Aki Yashiro both sing of 忍び逢う恋 (shinobi-au koi, furtive love) in their respective songs 夜霧よ今夜もありがとう (“Yogiri yo Konya mo Arigatō,” “Thank You Again Today, Night Fog”) and なみだ恋 (“Namida-goi,” “Tearful Love”).
