Good Monday morning.
The mercury is stuck in the low 20s, and this dingy city is wearing a fresh white coat.
It’s just a measly inch or two of snow, and we’re used to it by now — this is the 13th measurable snowfall of the season.
Things could be a lot worse. Still, it might be a bit dicey getting around this morning. “Many secondary roads remain snow covered and slick,” the National Weather Service warned at 5:30 a.m.
dingyは「黒ずんだ、きたない」という意味の単語で、LDOCEも"dark, dirty, and in bad condition" と定義しています。でも何となくピンとはきません。よい例になるかどうか分かりませんが、真っ白なクルマを洗車もせずにしばらく放っておくと黒ずんできますが、そういう状態を表すのがこの形容詞です。ここでは雪が降り続いて黒ずんだ街に新たな雪（fresh white coat）が降ることを伝えるためにdingyが効果的に用いられています。

Caffeine common in kids, young adults; mainly soda
CHICAGO — Nearly 3 out of 4 U.S. children and young adults consume at least some caffeine, mostly from soda, tea and coffee. The rate didn't budge much over a decade, although soda use declined and energy drinks became an increasingly common source, a government analysis finds.
Though even most preschoolers consume some caffeine-containing products, their average was the amount found in half a can of soda, and overall caffeine intake declined in children up to age 11 during the decade.
The analysis is the first to examine recent national trends in caffeine intake among children and young adults and comes amid a U.S.
Food and Drug Administration investigation into the safety of caffeine-containing foods and drinks, especially for children and teens. In an online announcement about the investigation, the FDA notes that caffeine is found in a variety of foods, gum and even some jelly beans and marshmallows.
The probe is partly in response to reports about hospitalizations and even several deaths after consuming highly caffeinated drinks or energy shots. The drinks have not been proven to be a cause in those cases.
The new analysis, by researchers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, shows that at least through 2010, energy drinks were an uncommon source of caffeine for most U.S. youth.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP)—Marvin Williams has been so hot the last three games that he didn’t let an air ball bother him.
With Utah leading by seven in the fourth quarter against the reigning NBA champs, the Jazz forward released a long 2-point jumper that wasn’t close.

Joji Kato finised fifth and Keiichiro Nagashima placed sixth in the men’s 500-meter speed skating race on Monday.
Kato clocked a combined 1 minute 9.74 seconds over the two races. Nagashima’s time was 1:10.04. Yuya Oikawa was 15th.
Netherlands swept the podium, with Michel Mulder winning gold in 1:09.31.
At the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, Nagashima and Kato finished 2-3 behind South Korea’s Mo Tae Burn.

Sochi 2014: Jack Whelbourne falls in 1,500m short track final
Britain's Jack Whelbourne crashed and injured himself in the 1,500m short track speed skating final at Sochi 2014 but hopes to skate on through the pain.
The 22-year-old had defied his world ranking to reach the final but twisted his ankle mid-race and did not finish.
"It's very sore but hopefully I'll be OK for the other two distances," the Nottingham skater told BBC Sport.
Canada's Charles Hamelin won the race ahead of China's Han Tianyu as Viktor Ahn won bronze for hosts Russia.
Ahn won three gold medals and a bronze at the Turin Games eight years ago while competing for South Korea as Ahn Hyun-soo, but switched nationality to Russia and changed his name ahead of competing in Sochi.
Earlier on Monday, British duo Elise Christie and Charlotte Gilmartin came safely through their 500m heats to reach Thursday's quarter-finals.
Whelbourne had created history as the first Briton to reach an Olympic 1,500m short track final.
But, having raced a perfect semi-final to reach the showdown for gold, he rolled his ankle on a black rubber block - used to mark the course - which had become dislodged. "It can be quite common in the sport," he said.

Afghan Health Minister Soraya Dalil said the continuing opposition of the Pakistani Taliban was a threat, "undermining efforts" to eradicate polio in Afghanistan.
After the initial local vaccination campaign, routine campaigns would continue, she said, to keep up the pressure, and ensure that this is an isolated case and not a new outbreak.
"This new case in Kabul tells us that the effort on polio eradication is not over yet, and we have to accelerate the effort to make sure that every child, no matter where they are, receive polio drops."

Plane from Tokyo diverts to Anchorage after passenger goes 'berserk'
A commercial jetliner flying from Tokyo to New York City was diverted to Anchorage early Monday after a passenger on the flight went "berserk" and had to be zip-tied to a seat by flight attendants.
Nobuya Michael Ochinero, 38, was arrested by federal agents and police officers at Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport early on Monday, according to the FBI.
Ochinero seemed volatile from the time he boarded All Nippon Airways Flight 10, said Chuck Lustig, a Human Rights Watch deputy executive director who was seated in front of the man.
The flight is supposed to be a 12.5 hour nonstop haul from Tokyo to New York's John F. Kennedy Airport.
"He was berserk from the moment he got on the plane. He was yelling and screaming, spitting on the floor. He was smacking the back of my seat and other passengers' seats," Lustig said.
Ochinero began harassing flight attendants and yelling, he said.
"It was more like crazy grunting. Nothing really intelligible."
Flight attendants tried in vain to calm the man down, Lustig said. Finally, crew members and passengers hatched a plan to subdue Ochinero.
They used zip-tie handcuffs, which were apparently onboard the Boeing 777, to tie the man to a seat. Lustig said Ochinero tried to spit at the passengers and crew.
"He was struggling from time to time. He'd stop and talk to people and struggle some more."
Two of the men who helped subdue Ochinero sat guard for the next hour or two, until an announcement came from the cockpit:
Flight 10 was being diverted to Anchorage due to a passenger who posed a security concern.
By that time the entire coach section -- "and probably the people in business class and first," Lustig said -- knew what was going on.

berserkはすでにブログでも取り上げていますが、中世スカンジナビアもしくはアイスランドで使われていた言葉を由来にし、「クマの上着」を表します。そこから「怒り狂って暴れる」という意味で用いられます。go berserkで"informal to become very angry and violent"とLDOCEには定義されています。きっと怒り狂ったクマのように暴れたのでしょうね。（UG）

発表趣旨：日本社会に暮らす外国人住民が抱える問題が多様化する中、その課題解決にあたり、通訳者と多分野の専門家・専門機関との協働による相談の仕組みづくりが求められている。大学もまた、こうした仕組みづくりの一担い手であり、「実践の場づくり」や「ユーザー教育」などにおける役割が期待されている。本発表では東京外国語大学による事例を踏まえつつ、社会連携の枠組みにおいて通訳人材を養成する際の課題を抽出し、今後大学における通訳教育の方向性について検討したい。

And there is a stronger amber warning - meaning "be prepared" - for wind for Wednesday with "possible gusts of 80mph or more in exposed areas" areas of the South West.
Laura Gilchrist said deep areas of low pressure on Wednesday could bring, potentially, the strongest wind so far this winter.

Music Critic’s Suspicions Led to Composer’s Downfall
The fall of Mamoru Samuragochi, the charismatic composer who now admits he hired someone to create his works, may have begun in October with a magazine article by Takeo Noguchi, a music critic and conductor.
At the time, Mr. Samuragochi was at the peak of his fame in his home country as “Japan’s Beethoven,” and his work was set to accompany skater Daisuke Takahashi at the Sochi Winter Games. But Mr. Noguchi thought he heard something out of tune in the Samuragochi persona, cultivated over more than a decade through interviews, books and a nationally broadcast documentary.
Mr. Samuragochi’s description of himself as the son of atomic-bomb survivors, completely deaf and racked by migraines yet committed to his art, struck the critic as over the top. “I’ve never met him in person, but listening to his music and reading his books—which can be self-indulgently sentimental at times—I couldn’t help feeling something awkward,” he said in an interview.

【題目】太平洋戦争時のオーストラリア軍における日本語教育プログラムとその参加者
【要旨】オーストラリア軍では、太平洋戦争の末期から終戦直後にかけ、日本語通訳者を養成する目的で、集中的な日本語教育が実施された。このプログラム参加者は、日本語コース修了後、占領軍の一員として来日し、日本語と英語のリエゾンとして活躍した。本発表では、この日本語集中プログラムについて概観するとともに、オーストラリア人の若い軍人が、終戦直後の日本でどのような役割を果たしたのかについても考察してみたい。プログラムに実際に参加した6名を対象にインタビューを実施済みで、彼らのプロフィールについても紹介する。

【題目】日本の近・現代詩―英訳の可能性について―
【要旨】本報告は、萩原朔太郎と中原中也を中心に日本の現代詩および近代詩の英訳の可能性について論じる。アメリカ20世紀の代表的な詩人である Robert Frost をはじめ、全般的に詩の翻訳の不可能性を訴える者は少なくない。まさに、語族や文化的背景がきわめて異なる日本語と英語の場合、日本の詩歌の翻訳は困難であるとよく指摘される。しかし、例えば Walter Benjamin のような積極的な翻訳論により、敢えて「言語の成長」を考えれば、散文の翻訳より詩の翻訳のほうが可能性や役割が大きいともいえる。翻訳者としては、Frost のような「母語主義」による否定的かつ消極的思考がもつ「弱さ」がむしろ「ばね」となり、詩の翻訳は「言語の成長」に大いに貢献できるという発想につながる。比較的「翻訳しやすい」朔太郎と「翻訳しにくい」中也を代表にし、さまざまな困難や可能性について論じる。

UG先生ご指名ありがとうございます。さっそく文脈を見てみました。まず文を”Mr. Samuragochi’s description struck the critic as over the top.”と短くしました。直訳すると「佐村河氏の….という自己紹介が批評家（野口氏）に”over the top”という印象を与えた」となります、つまり、「彼の略歴があまりにも話しが出来過ぎではないと直感した」あたりと考えました。さらにWisdom英和辞典（第三版）』（三省堂）で”over the top”を調べますと，「表面を覆って，度が過ぎて，思った以上に」など色々な意味がありました。ここでの文脈では「度が過ぎて（過度の，とっぴな）」が当てはまると思います。”top”は「頂上，てっぺん」などという意味なのでそれを”over”「超える」というニュアンスから発生する「出来過ぎたもの」だと思いました。
ちなみに”over the top”というタイトルの映画があります。これは主人公のシルヴェスター・スタローンがアームレスリングでチャンピオンを目指す過程で家族の絆を取り戻すというストーリーです。日本語訳はそのまま『オーバー・ザ・トップ』です。ここでの意味は「限界を超えて」というくらいでしょうか。（Ume）
