エドワード・バーン=ジョーンズ シリーズ「薔薇物語」
13世紀の「薔薇物語」だけどさ、読んだことある？チョーサーが訳した「薔薇物語」から、モリスやバーン=ジョーンズはインスピレーションを得て作品化したんだよね。
ちょっと僕の趣味ではないけれどチョーサーにちなんだ作品を紹介。
フランスのギョーム・ド・ロリスの詩に、ジャン・ド・マンが続編や挿画したように、翻訳された「薔薇物語」をバーン=ジョーンズはモリスとタペストリーにしたり、油彩画なんかも描いたんだ。

七つの美徳や悪徳からなんかの擬人像がでてくるんだけど、中世の騎士道精神やその愛なんかが語られるわけ。
この庭園に詩人が訪れて、愛の神の矢がささり薔薇に恋をする。その場面がこのバーン=ジョーンズの作品なんだ。

「薔薇物語 怠惰に出迎えられる巡礼者」 エドワード・バーン=ジョーンズ
美しく着飾った女性が出迎えるようにい手を差し伸べている。実は曖昧なんだけど、「怠惰」の擬人像ではなかったかな。
新プラトン主義で語られたニ柱のヴィーナスは世俗と天上のヴィーナスで、作曲家のワグナーや詩人のスウィンバーンは、この世俗のヴィーナスを主題に、ファムファタル的なヴィーナスとタンホイザーとの官能生活の伝説をさらに深い印象のものにした。

いばらから導きだされた詩人だろうか。このバーン=ジョーンズの「薔薇物語」は、「いばら姫」、「ピグマリオン」、「ペルセウス」、「天地創造」、「聖ゲオリスク」同様に「シリーズ」としてみなされている。（数少ないけどね。）
愛の巡礼はいばらの棘にもささるという教訓だろうか、この作品。

これは油彩画にもある作品で、薔薇のしげみ（いばら姫を思い出す）っていうの？棘のある薔薇に囲まれた女性は、スウィンバーンのヴィーナス賛歌のように、異界の洞窟で誘う女性にもみえる。詩人が真実の愛をみつけた瞬間にもみえる。
面白いのはこの詩人が天使に手をひかれて導かれるという描き方が、ダンテの「神曲」のウェルギリウスとダンテに思われるのは僕だけ？

「薔薇のこころ」エドワード・バーン=ジョーンズ
ジョーン=バーンズは20年のあいだ、チョーサーの「薔薇物語」に断続的に取り組んできたらしい。薔薇物語の悦楽の園からはじまった詩人の愛の巡礼では、ナルシスの泉に映った薔薇の蕾に恋するんだけど、バーン・ジョーンズは「鏡のヴィーナス」や「不吉な顔」なんかで、水鏡に顔を映した描き方をしているしね。
