このビリージョエルの「ピアノマン」という曲は、彼が、失意の中で、ロスのピアノバーでピアノの弾き語りをしている時の経験を元にしてできた曲である。

この曲はニューヨークの夜景が似合う曲などと、ニューヨークの哀愁を歌ったものという風に思っている人が多いと思うが、実は違うのである。

このロスのピアノバー時代のことを彼はあまり語ろうとしない。このピアノバーも今はなく、彼のファンクラブ情報等を元に、その時の概要をまとめてみた。

Today, I introduce one of my favorite songs,"Piano man" by Billy Joel.

In 1971, Billy Joel recorded his first "solo" album, "Cold Spring Harbor",

for Family Records. Billy was embarrassed by the record, which had

been mastered at the wrong speed. It was produced by Artie Ripp.

All songs were composed by Billy Joel. He was disappoinred by this accident,

so he decided to join touring for six months to support the album,

opening for acts like J. Geils Band and Badfinger.

However, discouraged by this tour,Billy moved to Los Angels, California.

There he performed as Bill Martin at Corky's on Van Nuys Blvd and at the

Executive Lounge piano bar on Wilshire Blvd.

The experience is related in his first Columbia single: Piano Man in 1973.

アーティ・リップによって制作された1971年のアルバム『コールド・スプリング・ハーバー』でビリー・ジョエルはソロ・アーティストとしてレコードデビューする。

しかしながらこのアルバムは録音テープの再生速度を上げられてしまい全く別人のような歌声で発表された。不本意な内容の上ヒットにも至らず、

失望のあまり自宅にひきこもりがちになってしまう。再起を試みたのか、彼は、J・ガイルズ（当初はJ・ガイルズ・ブルース・バンドを名乗り、

かなり本格的なブルースを演奏していた。「アメリカのストーンズ」と評されていた）やバッドフィンガーのレコーディングツアーに参加していたが、

やはり彼の心を満たすまでには至らなかった。

気分転換を図るためか、後に妻（１９８３年に離婚）となるマネージャーのエリザベス・ウェーバーと共にロサンゼルスに移住している。

約６ヶ月間滞在した。ビル・マーティンという名前で「エグゼクティブラウンジ」と「コーキーズ」を中心にライヴ活動を行った彼は、コロンビア・レコードから

1973年にアルバム『ピアノ・マン』で再デビューを果たす。表題曲が全米トップ30のスマッシュ・ヒットとなったことによってこのアルバムはセールスを伸ばし、

彼にとって初となるゴールド・ディスク認定作品となった。
